Net Zero Emission Economy – Is your country doing enough?

2015 marked as a historic year where 196 countries subscribed to the Paris Agreement to act on against climate change threats and transform towards sustainable development. The Paris Agreement requires each signatory to prepare, communicate and maintain successive nationally determined contributions (NDCs) that it intends to achieve. Parties shall pursue domestic mitigation measures, specify their pathways by which it is aims to meet those targets.

Are countries making progress?
Despite the 2015 agreement, global carbon emission increase 1.7% in 2017, 2.1% in 2018 and a record high in 2019. It is reported that 75% of the pledges for 2030 were found insufficient. Some of the global largest emitters haven’t even bother to make a pledge.

Two countries have achieved net zero emissions, largely due to their tiny populations and thick forests that store more carbon than the country emits. Six countries have net zero carbon targets in law. Five plus the EU have proposed legislation. Several others have targets in policy documents or under discussion.

Are you one of them? What is your national plan for this global wave of green commitment? Are you doing the right thing towards net-zero emission economy?

President Biden’s Domestic and Foreign Policies on Climate Change and Its Impact to Other Economies

President Biden has put tackling climate change at the centre of his policies. He was quick to re-join the Paris Agreement and declare plans to eliminate fossil fuel emissions from power generation by 2035.

Asia as a critical trading-bloc for the US will be key to tackling climate change due to its huge population and skyrocking carbon emissions. The United States will undertake energetic diplomacy for countries in Asia to commit to ambitious pledges on environmental sustainability such as reducing deforestation and decreasing reliance on coal in favour of renewable energy sources. Many more new and inaugural rules on green commitment will come. Suspension on non-sustainable products and businesses, stringent requirements on certification and etc will influence the economy and the people.
